Join in on a walk through the trails to kick off the New Year! We will be meeting at the Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area at 10am. Please wear weather appropriate attire and hiking shoes. Bring your water bottle and hiking gear. Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is required.

Thanks to some amazing animal care volunteers, they are fed a delicious smorgasbord of crickets, worms, minnows, and more! Who’s that hooting it up each January evening?? Owls that’s who. You will learn what makes them such effective night time hunters and why they hoot so much this time of year. Then we will go outside and see if we can entice any owls to fly in and talk to us. Be prepared to spend the second part of the class outside.

Winter birds and waterfowl are abundant at Mingo. We are going down to see how many we can spot in one day. We will be in and out of the van at several spots. Please dress according to the weather and wear good shoes. Bring a refillable water bottle and snack if you wish.

Start the new year off right by catching some winter trout!

Start the morning off with a trout fishing lesson in the class room at the Kansas City Regional Conservation Office where we'll learn how to catch and clean trout. Then we'll head down to Honker Pond to try our luck catching some hungry trout.

Dress for the weather but if you get cold while you are fishing you can take a break to warm up by the fire and enjoy some hot chocolate.

Only children can fish at Honker Pond but parents and family are welcome to attend.

Missouri Department of Conservation will provide all of the equipment, bait, fishing coaches, hot chocolate and a warm fire.

Children do not need a trout permit to fish at this event as long as they plan to release their fish, if they would like to keep the trout that they catch they will need a trout permit.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

If bad weather is forcast the day of this event it may be postponed. You will be contacted if any changes are necessary.

Break out of your cabin fever and discover a winter wildlife haven, Dresser Island! We will hike 6.5 miles (with an option for 3.5 miles) along the Mississippi River in search of a variety of wildlife including eagles, pelicans, waterfowl, muskrats, deer, and many others.

Trail Treks! New Year’s Hike at Forest 44 Conservation Area

Have you ever seen a stream disappear? Join MDC naturalists to discover this and other wonders at Forest 44 Conservation Area in St. Louis County. As we hike the 2.5-mile Dogwood Ridge Trail, we will explore the fascinating cultural and natural history of the area. Directions: Near the intersection of I-44 and Highway 141, take Meramec Station Road west 1 mile, then left on Hillsboro Road 1/2 mile to the area entrance. We will meet in the parking lot. Questions? Call Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center at 314-301-1500. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring a water bottle. Directions and more information will be emailed to participants upon registration.

Missouri River Bird Observatory staff and Burr Oak Woods partner in an on-going project to identify and track the birds that come to our feeders each winter. From the resident chickadees and cardinals to the migrating juncos and sparrows, we capture, apply colored bands and release these fascinating creatures. Once banded and recorded, you will be able to track individual birds through this and future seasons. This program is weather permitting.

Predator hunting can be done at times of the year when other hunting seasons are closed. This introductory program will cover the basics of predator hunting and trapping. We will cover equipment needed, set-ups, and calling. Both basic as well as some advanced tactics will be covered.

Missouri is a winter home to many kinds of waterfowl. Find out how and why some ducks and geese migrate and learn how to identify them by sight and sound. Then become a scientist and discover how the right mix of feathers and oil help them to survive even the coldest winter.

What better way to enjoy nature’s bounty than to use Dutch oven cooking. Learn the techniques of this cooking style from Sara Bradshaw and enjoy the results of your work at the end of class. This program is designed for ages 16 and up. Attendees under 18 must have a parent or guardian present. Class size limit of 12. Reservations are required. Game of Homes: Winter is coming!
Thursday 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
(Adults) Winter is coming and wildlife are looking for new homes to stay warm. Are they planning on taking yours over? Don’t lose the battle! This program will offer tips and suggestions for homeowners on how to keep or stop nuisance wildlife from entering your house and the common entry points they use. Learn about the different types of wildlife that commonly cause problems and what you can do to keep wildlife in the wild. (Reservations begin December 8th).

With sightings of eagles on the rise in the area, Twin Pines is hosting a program to increase your knowledge of these magnificent birds. The Dickerson Park Zoo will be bringing both a Bald and Golden eagle to give attendees a closer look, answer questions and provide fun facts. This program is for school children ages 5 to 13.
