CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will host the annual Southeast Region Discover Nature Girls Camp at Camp SEMO in Wappapello June 20 -22. This free, three-day, two-night girls camp introduces campers ages 11 to 15 to outdoors skills in a supportive learning environment.
“Learning how to confidently explore and enjoy nature builds self-esteem and confidence,” said Conservation Agent Alan Lamb, the camp coordinator. “Also, experiencing the outdoors at a young age leads to a greater care for conservation when children become adults. Our aim is to help these young women become great stewards of conservation in the future.”
Campers will spend three fun-filled days learning from conservation experts. Activities include the Hunter Education course and test, shooting firearms and archery equipment, walking through a safety trail, canoeing, orienteering/geocaching, and fishing. This all occurs in a group setting of peers, taught by knowledgeable instructors who encourage participants to be comfortable in the outdoors and try new things.
“We want campers to leave with the confidence to explore Missouri’s diverse outdoors on their own,” Lamb said.
The camp is limited to 40 girls between the ages of 11 to 15 years old. The first 40 applications received will be selected to attend.
