COLUMBIA, Mo. — The unstaffed shooting range located on the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Rocky Fork Lakes Conservation Area (CA) will close temporarily on J Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 une 23 for renovations and updates. The range is expected to reopen by Oct. 15 to ensure deer hunters will have a convenient place to sight in their rifles. The rest of the conservation area will remain open.

Renovations to the range will include increasing the height of berms, re-facing the main backstop to prevent erosion, improving long-term soil stability, and enhancing safety. A number of safety features will be added as well, such as covered shooting pavilions for the rifle and handgun ranges, and concrete shooting pads on the shotgun range.

During the range’s closure, shooters are encouraged to use other unstaffed ranges MDC operates at the following conservation areas: Rudolf Bennitt north of Columbia off of Route T, Marshall Junction off of Route CC in southern Saline County, Scrivner Road located about three miles south of Russellville in Cole County, Wellsville Lake located south of Wellsville in Montgomery County, and Whetstone Creek located northwest of Williamsburg in Callaway County. For more information about these areas, visit www.mdc.mo.gov.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation also maintains an online database of private and public shooting ranges at www.WhereToShoot.org. Visitors to the website can search for ranges by location and shooting activities.

Rocky Fork Lakes CA is located in Boone County approximately six miles north of Columbia on Highway 63 and one-half mile east on Peabody Road. Because the area is located near a population center of more than 100,000 people, its 2,200 acres are heavily used by many for every type of outdoor activity suitable to the area.
