SPANISH LAKE, Mo.— How do animals like frogs, turtles, deer and squirrels survive the challenges of winter? There are a lot of lessons to be learned from nature and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) believes it’s never too early to embark on the journey of learning.
MDC presents the Animals in Winter program Jan. 21 from 10-11 a.m. at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area. This program tailored for children ages 2-5 and will bring the struggles animals face during winter to life, along with the unique ways they overcome them.
The fun and engaging activities will reveal to preschoolers the many adaptations animals have that help them survive the coldest time of year. Indoor learning which will include a chance to see live animals and touch real furs, and a story time. Kids will then make their very own bird treats from pinecones and birdseed to help attract avian visitors to their yards.
The next stop is outdoors, where the young explorers can stimulate their creativity by making hibernation nests for animals out of natural materials. Dressing for the weather is recommended.
Animals in Winter is a free program, however advanced online registration is required at https://bit.ly/2H5p734. Siblings are welcome, keeping in mind that this program was designed for ages 2-5. Parents and guardians should register only the children that will be participating. Registration closes January 20.
Columbia Bottom Conservation Area is located at 801 Strodtman Road in north St. Louis County. The area can be reached by taking the Riverview Drive Exit from I-270 and travelling north approximately 3 miles.
