SACROXIE, Mo. -- Fifth-grader Max Wangler from Sacroxie R-II elementary school took first place in the Elementary Division at the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP)/International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) 3-D Challenge national tournament on May 9 in Louisville, Kentucky. Max shot a very impressive score of 290 out 300, which ended up being the top score for all Elementary Division shooters.
Max's teammate, Drake Acheson, also shot extremely well in the 3-D Challenge and came back to Missouri with a third-place finish in the Elementary Division with a score of 286.
More than 2,800 student archers from around the nation competed in the 3-D Challenge, an optional tournament that was part of the NASP national tournament. For the 3-D Challenge, archers shot 30 arrows at six different life-sized animal targets placed at unknown distances. All archers who competed in the tournament used Genesis compound bows, which are free of any sighting devices or release aids.
Max, Drake, and more than 12,000 other students from 44 states competed in the NASP national tournament. Students had to qualify at their respective state tournaments this past winter in order to gain eligibility to compete at nationals.
Missouri was the fourth most represented state this year, sending 775 archers though the Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP). MoNASP is coordinated through the Missouri Department of Conservation in partnership with numerous schools and supporting organizations throughout the state. MoNASP is an affiliate of NASP and promotes education, self-esteem, and physical activity for students in grades 4-12 through participation in the sport of archery.
