KIRKWOOD, Mo—The man who helped mold the Missouri Botanical Garden (MoBOT) into the world-class institution it is today will speak at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center.
Dr. Peter H. Raven will present “The World is a Garden; We’re All its Gardeners” Tuesday, May 23 at 7 p.m. in the nature center’s auditorium. Dr. Raven, one of the world's leading botanists and advocates of conservation and biodiversity, appears courtesy of the Miramiguoa Chapter of Missouri Master Naturalists. The event is free and open to the public.
Time Magazine heralded Dr. Raven as a “hero of the planet” for his pioneering, worldwide research to help protect endangered plants. For more than 39 years, Dr. Raven headed MoBOT, a world-class center for botanical research, education, and horticultural display. Currently, Dr. Raven serves as MoBOT’s president emeritus, and George Engelmann Professor of Botany Emeritus at Washington University in St. Louis. He is also a trustee of the National Geographic Society and chairman of the society’s Committee for Research and Exploration.
Dr. Raven’s presentation will explore the challenges of maintaining sustainable natural resources on a planet with an ever-growing population. He will address stewardship and conservation for the long-term success of our natural world.
