KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Northeast Regional Office in Kirksville is ready to connect the public with nature in May.
A full list of upcoming programs planned for May can be found online at mdc.mo.gov/events. All programs require advanced registration and space is limited. Unless otherwise noted, all programs are offered at the MDC Northeast Regional Office, located at 3500 S. Baltimore Street in Kirksville.

There’s fungus among us! Join MDC naturalists to learn about Missouri’s edible mushrooms, and those you should avoid!

Tuesday, May 10 from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Visit and discover the creatures that live under a log. An active game of “I Spy” will give children a chance to count the legs, body parts, and wings to help them identify these crawly creatures. A discovery hike gives students the tools to capture bugs and release them unharmed.

Wednesday, May 18 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
This program will focus on how to catch crappie, and how to clean and cook them after you catch them!

Tuesday, May 24 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Join naturalists to watch amazingly up-close footage filmed with specially-developed macro lenses that bring you the most intimate and most spectacular portrayal of a working bee colony ever filmed. It’s not frightening – it’s fascinating. See things you never imagined. Discover newfound facts about the strange and complex life of bees in Bees: Tales from the Hive. Participants will also have the chance to make a bee nesting house after the documentary. The film is around 54 minutes in length.

Thursday, May 26 from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
Pollination occurs when pollen is moved within flowers or carried from flower to flower by pollination animals, such as bees, bats, beetles, birds, and more! Join naturalists to learn about Missouri’s pollinating species.

Visitors can manage program registration online at mdc.mo.gov/northeastevents. The first step in registering for a program is creating an account, then signing up for future programs is simple. Once registrants create an account and register for events, they will receive details about those specific programs.
Families now have the option to link their children’s accounts to their own accounts, which will streamline the program registration process. Once a group account is set up, parents will be able to register their children to an event without having to logoff and login for each individual. This functionality will allow parents to register their entire family or select family members to an event at the same time. First, users will log into their account and click “My Group Profile,” then add family members to their account. Setting up a group account can make program registration quicker and easier for all MDC programs.
