OVERTON, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will install a new river access and boat ramp to replace the former Taylor’s Landing access on the Missouri River.
At its former location on the north side of the Interstate 70 bridge, erosion and flood damage made the access road inaccessible, and further maintenance became cost-prohibitive. MDC closed the old river access with hopes of relocating it to a more stable location. Prior to its closing, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) estimated 12,000 users annually at the former Taylor’s Landing site.
Careful planning and closely coordinated efforts between MDC, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, US Army Corps of Engineers, and USFWS have culminated in plans for a new river access and boat ramp at a location just south of the Interstate 70 bridge at Overton. The site for the new access has been secured and routes users along existing public right-of-way on Cumberland Church Road. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2021.
“There are so many great opportunities the Missouri River offers,” said MDC Fisheries Management Biologist Darby Niswonger. “This access should provide a convenient location for many recreational uses, such as floating, wildlife watching, angling, hunting, and many more. It will also provide another important access point for emergency services.”
If weather and river levels permit, MDC anticipates opening the new Taylor’s Landing river access by the fall of 2021.
This new infrastructure on the Missouri River reflects the commitment of MDC and partner agencies to ensure all Missourians have safe, reliable access to natural resources such as the Missouri River.
When completed, Taylor’s Landing river access will offer a parking lot that meets Americans with Disabilities Act standards and a concrete boat ramp off of the existing Cumberland Church Road. The boat ramp will provide an important public access point for river users between the upstream Franklin Island Access in Howard County, and the downstream Providence Access in Boone County.
