CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) announces a pond workshop March 24 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center. Pond owners will learn how to improve their fishery, deal with nuisance aquatic plants, and decide what fish species are best to stock or harvest.

“Ponds can provide an excellent fishery with a few simple management techniques,” said Jason Crites,  MDC fisheries management biologist.

Topics presented by Crites and other biologists at the workshop will be pond construction, watershed management, fish stocking and management, aquatic vegetation establishment and control.

“We hope people will bring questions so we can help them with whatever their individual pond needs are,” Crites said. “The opportunity to discuss fish management in small ponds is truly one of my favorite parts of my job and I look forward to these informal discussions.”

Like all programs at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, the pond workshop is free. Seating is limited, so pre-registration is required by March 23.  To register or to find more information, call the Nature Center at (573)-290-5218. The Nature Center is located in Cape County Park North. For more information on programs at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center go online to mdc.mo.gov/CapeNatureCenter.
