Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free youth trout fishing clinic from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Dec. 11, at the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area in Lee’s Summit. This clinic will start with a classroom lesson in how to catch and clean trout at MDC’s Kansas City Regional Office. Then the clinic will move to the area’s Honker Pond where participants will try fishing for trout with help from instructors.
This clinic is open to participants ages 7-15. Only youths may fish in Honker Pond. However, parents and family are welcome to accompany the youths and learn how to fish for trout. All participants must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees will not need a permit to fish if they release any trout they catch. If they wish to keep fish, they will need a Missouri trout permit. Trout permits must be obtained prior to the event. COVID-19 safety precautions will be observed.
“Dress for the weather, but if you get cold while you are fishing you can take a break to warm up by the fire and enjoy some hot chocolate,” said John Rittel, MDC community education assistant. “MDC will provide all of the equipment, bait, fishing coaches, hot chocolate, and a warm fire.”
