Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a variety of Discover Nature—Fishing lessons during late summer in the Kansas City area. Summer’s slow transition to autumn is often a good time to catch fish. The free Discover Nature—Fishing lessons teach newcomers the basics of catching fish and preparing them for cooking.

The Discover Nature—Fishing program divides classes into four separate lessons about fishing tackle, methods, ecology, and regulations. Participants go fishing as part of the lessons.

Lessons 1 and 2 will be offered from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Liberty branch of the Mid-Continent Public Library. This session will include lessons only. But the actual fishing portion of the program will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, at lakes at Fountain Bluff Park in Liberty.

Lessons 1 and 2 will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 17, at Prairie Hollow Lake at MDC’s James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area in Lee’s Summit. Lesson 3 will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, at the same location. Lesson 4 will follow from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, at Prairie Hollow Lake.

Freshwater fish make tasty table fare. MDC will offer a free lesson on how to clean, care for, and prepare fish for cooking from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, at the Educational Pond at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs. The Burr Oak Woods pond will also host Discover Nature—Fishing Lesson Four from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
