MDC offers free hunting workshops in the Kansas City area

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Autumn and winter bring hunting seasons, a chance to enjoy the outdoors and obtain meat for home tables. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer free classes in the Kansas City area to introduce newcomers to the hunting sports.

MDC’s Burr Oak Woods Nature Center will offer Introduction to Deer Hunting 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29. The class is open for participants age 11 and older. Youths ages 11-15 must be accompanied by a participating adult. The course will cover deer hunting basics from scouting locations to tracking deer. Burr Oak Woods is located at 1401 N.W. Park Road in Blue Springs.

Three hunting classes will be offered this fall by MDC’s Parma Woods Shooting Range, 15900 N.W. River Road near Parkville.

Parma Woods will offer a Fall Turkey Hunting Workshop 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27. Turkey hunting tactics in autumn differ from those used during the spring season. MDC staff will teach tactics, skills, and safety. The workshop is open to ages 11 and older. Youths ages 11-15 must be accompanied by a participating adult.

A Discover Nature ── Family Squirrel Hunting Clinic will be offered at Parma Woods 1 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30. The clinic is open to all ages. Squirrel hunting is a time-honored tradition. MDC staff will explain regulations, equipment, tactics, and preparing harvested squirrels for cooking. The class involves actual hunting with instructors. Participants must meet any legal requirements regarding licenses and hunter education.

Ducks and geese will be the focus when the Parma Woods staff teaches Hunting – Basics: Waterfowl 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Instructors will talk about waterfowl identification, habitats, hunting strategies, gear, and care of harvested game. Participants must be age 11 or older, and those ages 11-15 must be accompanied by an adult.
