MDC offers free firearms safety and skills classes during July at Parkville

Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer free classes during July at the Parma Woods Shooting Range and Training Center to help newcomers learn firearms safety and skills. Some classes at the Parkville training center are especially oriented to teaching young participants firearms safety.

  • A Youth Rifle Basics class will be taught from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 6. This class is open to participants ages 11 to 15. Instructors will teach firearm operation and safety, including safe storage of guns. The class will include target shooting on the range with instructor supervision and assistance. MDC will provide firearms and ammunition, and participants are welcome to bring their own. Registration is required. To register, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/4W4.
  • A Level 2 Handgun Basics class will be offered from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 8. This class is for beginners and those with intermediate handgun skills. Instructors will teach safety and fundamental shooting techniques. During live fire on the range, they will offer tips on improving handgun shooting skills. Participants need to provide their own firearm and 100 rounds of target ammunition. This class is open to participants ages 21 and older. Registration is required.   • A BB Gun Fun class will be offered from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 13. This class is open to participants ages 8 to 11. A BB gun is often the first firearm a youth receives or encounters. This class will teach safety and shooting skills. MDC will provide BB guns and ammunition, or participants may bring their own.
