St. Joseph, Mo. – Catfish are fun to catch and make tasty table fare, which is why they’re one of the state’s most popular gamefish. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free catfish clinic from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, at the Happy Holler Lake Conservation Area near Savannah in Andrew County. MDC will provide all equipment and bait for participants.

This clinic will cover the basics about how to fish for and catch channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish. Instructor Brandon Johnson, MDC community education assistant, will demonstrate how to rig and use fishing rods, reels, and lines. He will talk about various baits each species prefers and what type of aquatic habitats they frequent. After demonstrations, participants will go catfishing at the lake with help from MDC staff.

The catfish clinic is open to all ages, though youths must be accompanied by an adult. Participants between the ages of 15 and 65 must have a valid fishing permit. COVID-19 safety precautions will be followed. Registration is required. To register, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/45g.
