Kansas City, Mo. – On a crisp, cool autumn evening, one way to keep warm is to gather around an outdoor campfire and cook a meal. The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Lake City Shooting Range will offer free Basic Fire Starting and Camp Side Cooking sessions in November and December.

The first session will be offered 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, and the second session will be held 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec 8. Registration is required. The programs are open to all ages.

Lake City staff will demonstrate how to start a campfire with flint and steel and also how to set up a fire circle that is safe. MDC staff will demonstrate how to prepare and cook meals over a campfire.

“We’re probably going to cook a stew or a chili,” said Kellie Zurowski, Lake City range officer. “We’ll also probably do some kind of Dutch oven dessert."
Taste tests will follow the cooking. Hot cocoa and s’mores will be served. Participants are welcome to share campfire stories.
