KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will host a free workshop on the basics of firearms and shooting in Kirksville.

Participants will learn about basics of firearms safety, shooting technique, equipment, target shooting, and more. The program will consist of classroom lessons followed by hands-on, practical experience on the shooting range.

The classroom session will take place 5:30–8:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 6, at the MDC Northeast Regional Office, 3500 S. Baltimore St. in Kirksville. Upon arrival, participants will choose a day to attend the practical session on July 7, 8, or 9 at a nearby shooting range.

To help ensure public health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, MDC asks all participants to observe current, local guidelines regarding physical distancing and masking. MDC encourages participants to bring and wear face coverings when appropriate.

“Knowing the importance of firearms safety, how they function, and how to properly use them is important for all Missourians, regardless of whether they currently own one,” said MDC Conservation Educator Rob Garver. “This course is designed to provide a stress-free environment where participants can listen, ask questions, and become comfortable with all kinds of firearms.”

Participants may bring their unloaded and cased firearms to this workshop to learn on their own equipment. Otherwise, MDC will provide all necessary firearms and ammunition at this free course.

Participants must attend the classroom portion to attend the practical session on the shooting range. Participants must be at least 14-years old; those younger than 18-years old must be accompanied by an adult.

To attend, participants must preregister at mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/177912. For more information, contact Garver at (660) 785-2424, or email Rob.Garver@mdc.mo.gov.

Families now have the option to link their children’s accounts to their own accounts which will streamline the program registration process.  Once a group account is setup parents will be able to register their children to an event without having to logoff and login for each individual.  This functionality will allow parents to register their entire family or select family members to an event at the same time.  First, users will log into their account and click “My Group Profile,” then add family members to their account.  Setting up a group account today will make program registration quicker and easier for all MDC programs.
