ST.CHARLES, Mo.—There are different kinds of light that can help a traveler find their way at night, such as moonlight, starlight, flashlights, but what about laser light?
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) presents a high-tech twist to finding your way through the woods after dark. Openings are still available for the Laser Night Hike 2.0—New Route, New Challenge program, this Saturday, Dec. 10 from 5-9:30 p.m. at the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area in St. Charles.
The program begins with a classroom portion where participants will learn to how to determine a bearing from a map and compass. Then they’ll head out into the night to tackle a two mile trek and search for waypoints through the woods on the north section of the area. Participants will be armed with flashlight, compass, map and laser pointers for this off-trail navigation adventure.
The program combines traditional back country navigation skills with a high-tech appeal. To find their way through the course, hikers use map and compass to plot bearings, and lasers to shoot and follow those bearings in the dark.
This free program is open to families with kids ages 10 and up. A moderate amount of physical challenge is required for this two-mile, off-trail hike through mostly flat terrain and forest vegetation. Participants are encouraged to bring sturdy walking/hiking footwear and dress appropriately for weather conditions.
