St. Louis, Mo. – What do streams mean to you? A destination for a summer float trip, a scenic view in the backyard, a place to cast a line and land a fish, or maybe where your livestock get water in the summer heat?
Anyone who has an interest in Show-Me State streams is invited to attend the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) presentation, “Understanding Missouri Streams.” The free educational program will be held Tuesday, April 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. at MDC's Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center in Kirkwood.
Presented by MDC Fisheries Management Biologist Sarah Peper, the program is designed to help attendees learn all about our state’s streams, their fish and wildlife, and how humans are impacting them.
Missouri is home to thousands of miles of streams, both large and small. Many wind through beautiful Ozark hills and springs such as the Current River in Southern Missouri. Others, such as the Meramec River, start their journey in wild, natural places and meander into the heart of the St. Louis Metro Area.
“Streams need us and we need them,” said Peper. “All of us are dependent upon streams for drinking water, places to discover nature, and even to support our families. The choices we make about streams influence our lives and the lives of the creatures struggling for survival.”
“Understanding Missouri Streams” will feature engaging discussions about stream dynamics, their rich diversity of aquatic life, and MDC-led initiatives to conserve streams, along with ways the public can help. It will also explore natural influences on these waterways, as well as historic and present-day human activities that affect them.
“All of us play an important part in conservation for ourselves, our neighbors, and our wildlife,” Peper said.
