SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – When used in controlled, supervised conditions, fire can be a beneficial land management tool. However, it’s important to stress that prescribed fire involves planning and on-site management.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will hold two prescribed burn workshops in southwest Missouri in January. These free workshops are for landowners who are interested in learning how to conduct prescribed burns properly and safely on their property with the goal of restoring native vegetation and improving wildlife habitat. Here is information about the upcoming workshops:

  • Barton County: 8:30 a.m.-noon, Jan. 21 at Shawnee Trail Conservation Area Shop; Southeast 50th Road, approximately three miles west of Highway M. Seating is limited so advanced registration is required. The registration deadline is Jan. 19. To register, call 417-682-3571 or e-mail Dave.Darrow@mdc.mo.gov
  • Newton County: 9 a.m.-noon, Jan. 28 at Walter Woods Conservation Area, on Dutch Elm Drive, approximately a mile west of Highway NN. Seating is limited so advanced registration is required. Contact MDC Private Land Conservationist Mike Petersen at 417-629-3423 or Mike.Petersen@mdc.mo.gov
