MDC invites new turkey hunters to mentored hunt at Mark Twain Lake

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will partner with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mark Twain Lake FOREST Council, and National Wild Turkey Federation to host a free mentored turkey hunt at Mark Twain Lake May 6 – 7. The hunt is designed for adults, 18 years of age or older, who have little to no experience turkey hunting.

An experienced mentor will be provided for each hunter. Participants may also provide their own mentor, so long as they comply with the requirements of MDC hunting regulations.

All participants must comply with 2017 MDC hunting regulations. They must either possess a valid Hunter Education Certification, or an Apprentice Hunter Authorization. All hunters must also possess a valid Missouri spring turkey hunting permit.

“This is a great opportunity for new hunters to go turkey hunting with an experienced guide, learn about turkeys, and maybe even harvest one,” said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Rob Garver. “This event will teach valuable skills to first-time turkey hunters, and help Missourians discover the joys of the hunt.”

To ensure a safe hunting experience, special event rules will be in effect throughout the two-day hunt, and will be outlined for participants prior to the hunt. Firearms will be restricted to 20-guage or larger shotguns.

Completed applications must be received by April 21 to qualify for the hunt. A random drawing will determine the 10 participants. If selected to participate, applicants must attend a hunt coordination meeting on the evening of May 5 at the M.W. Boudreaux Visitor Center.
