Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center will host a free Ladies Night Out outdoor skills event 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15. The event is free and no registration is necessary. Participants may simply walk in to the center at 4750 Troost Ave. in Kansas City.
MDC staff and volunteers will teach skills such as archery target shooting. The bows and arrows are easy to shoot and participants can quickly learn basic archery skills. Games and crafts will add to the fun and provide some take home art with nature themes. Attendees can learn to throw the atlatl, a dart and stick combo used by primitive humans for hunting and defense for many centuries. Fire starting with flint and steel is a primitive camping skills that’s fun to accomplish.
Many of the activities will occur in the center’s outdoor classroom and garden. This program is open to women age 16 and older. The native wildflowers in the garden will be hosting butterfly migrations in August. Visitors can tour the garden and visit with the staff about native plants or any conservation topic.
