Cole Camp, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will host a free private land management workshop for property owners in the Big Buffalo Creek watershed 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 15. This workshop is a community event and all ages are welcome. MDC will provide lunch, target archery shooting for youths, and field trips to examine both stream and upland conservation management practices.

Participants will have a chance to talk with MDC experts about woodland, forest and open-land management practices friendly to both farming and conservation. Management strategies for boosting deer and turkey hunting will be discussed as well as deer hunting regulation changes for 2017.

Big Buffalo Creek is a cool, clear-water stream with a wide variety of fish species. MDC manages the Big Buffalo Creek Conservation Area with stream frontage and upland forest in portions of Benton and Morgan counties. But the watershed also drains through many private lands, and practices on those lands are key to the stream’s health. MDC can connect landowners with grants and cost sharing funds to help implement conservation practices. Topics discussed at the workshop will include stream processes and best practice stream crossings that enable fish and other aquatic species to move up and down a stream.

The workshop will include three field trips to view forest management practices on private land, stream corridor practices that MDC has helped implement on private land, and management practices on Big Buffalo Creek Conservation Area such as timber stand improvement.

Attendees should dress appropriately for a woodland hike. The workshop meeting site will be at the Big Buffalo Creek Conservation Area campground and parking lot.  Pre-registration is required to attend. For information, directions to the workshop site, or to register, contact Andrea Thierfelder at 660-530-5500 or by email at andrea.thierfelder@mdc.mo.gov.
