JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites the public to get a hands-on outdoor skills lesson in basic rifle shooting on Oct. 23 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Jefferson City. There is no cost for the program, but pre-registration by Oct. 18 is required.

Participants will learn the basics of rifle operation, firearms safety, maintenance and rifle shooting fundamentals. Additionally rifle shooting techniques, matching a rifle with a scope and sighting will be discussed. Participants can follow-up this classroom session with practice on the range with a free rifle sight-in day on Nov. 9 from 8 a.m. to noon at Scrivner Road Conservation Area (CA).

“This class will be a great introduction to rifle shooting for the novice,” said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Brian Flowers. “Participants will learn basic skills that they can take to the shooting range or the woods this fall.”

Participants under 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult. To register or for more information, contact Flowers at Brian.Flowers@mdc.mo.gov or 573-815-7901, ext. 3388.

The Wesley United Methodist Church is located at 2727 Wesley St. in Jefferson City. Scrivner Road CA is south of Russellville on Route AA, then east on Scrivner Road.
