Kansas City, Mo. – If you didn’t have time to go to summer camp this year, or just long to go back again, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has a solution. MDC will offer a free Summer In the City camp night 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 28, at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Ave., in Kansas City. Participants can walk in for crafts, games, nature displays, and ice-cold frozen popsicles.

“We’ll wrap all your favorite summer camp activities into one fun evening,” said Heather Shellenberg, MDC education specialist.

Activity stations will be set up inside and outside the Discovery Center. Attendees will decorate camp bandanas, create art using natural materials, and see nature displays. The adventurous can learn how to start a fire with flint and steel. Staff will teach skills such as throwing darts with the atlatl, the method used for centuries to kill game before the bow and arrow was common.

Besides activities, visitors can walk the trails in the outdoor classroom and see summer blooming native wildflowers in the butterfly garden, prairie area, and landscape plantings. Bullfrogs will be croaking in the pond.

The walk-in camp welcomes all ages, no registration is required. For information about Summer In the City, call 816-759-7300. Information about the Discovery Center is available at
