Kansas City, Mo. – A Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) crew recently moved a fishing dock at Lake Jacomo to improve opportunities for anglers. The move was in partnership with Jackson County Parks and Recreation and a grant from the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation. Lake Jacomo is within the county’s Fleming Park, which is bordered by Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs.

The dock was originally provided by MDC at the 970-acre lake’s marina. Crews moved it to the northwest corner of the lake’s dam off Liggett Road. The new location has deeper water than the old mooring, said Jake Allman, MDC fisheries management biologist. Water depth under the dock is now 15 to 20 feet. Bluegill and channel catfish were the main catch at the old site. From this new spot, anglers will also have a better chance to catch walleye, white bass, crappie and flathead catfish.

“Lake Jacomo is a phenomenal fishing lake,” Allman said.

Crews will also be sinking cedar trees near the dock this winter to provide habitat that attracts fish. The dock is handicapped accessible. Parking lots are available nearby.

A private citizen donated $6,700 to the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation to make the dock move possible. The money was used to build a bulkhead and concrete walkway to the dock. Jackson County is partnering on costs for handrails for the walkway.

The dock is provided by MDC’s Community Assistance Program. MDC stocks fish and provides expertise and cost assistance for access and habitat improvements at public fishing lakes. For more on the community assistance program, go to https://mdc.mo.gov/property/community-grants-aid.
