KIRKWOOD, Mo.--Missouri is home to more than 200 different fish species. That’s a lot of species, and identifying them can be a challenge for beginning, and even experienced, anglers. Even for nature enthusiasts who may never cast a line, it’s still good to know a little about what lives in Missouri’s lakes, streams, and rivers.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will present One Fish, Two Fish, Blue Fish?, a free program on Wednesday, July 14, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. This will be a hybrid in-person and virtual event open to all ages, and participants can choose either option for attending. The in-person class will be held at Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center in Kirkwood.
The program is about identifying common native and nonnative fish that both beginning and experienced anglers will encounter on the water. Join MDC naturalists as they take participants on a guided tour of the most popular game and non-game fish in Missouri. Attendees will get to know species like bass, crappie, sunfish, catfish, trout . . . and even the invasive carps.
The program will include detailed graphics to help attendees learn to identify the unique features of each species of fish discussed. For anyone who might have trouble telling the difference between a rainbow and a brown, a flathead and a blue, or largemouth from a smallmouth, this program will sort it all out.

The virtual event will be conducted via WebEx. Participants will receive an email invitation from with the link approximately 24 hours prior to the event. Please check junk mail/spam folders if you do not receive the invitation.
For attendees of the in-person program, Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center is located at 11715 Cragwold Road in Kirkwood, near the intersection of I-44 and I-270. MDC asks all participants to observe current local social distancing and masking guidelines. Bringing and wearing face coverings is encouraged when appropriate for the in-person activity.
Program registrants should note that families now have the option to link their children’s accounts to their own which will streamline the program registration process. Once a group account is set up, parents will be able to register their children to an event without having to logoff and login for each person. This allows parents to register an entire family or select family members to an event at the same time.
