Kansas City, Mo. – Wild birds add color and movement to the outdoors in winter. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering a free program on how to identify birds seen at feeders and in woodlands and grasslands. Sessions are offered from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center in Kansas City.

MDC instructors will teach participants how to use iNaturalist, eBird, and other digital bird identification apps. Lessons will include how to blend the technology with the natural habits and habitats of birds by recording sightings online. Data gathered and recorded is used by scientists to monitor bird populations and migrations.

Participants are recommended to bring iPhones, iPads, Android phones or tablets. If accommodations are needed, please e-mail the instructor after registering and at least one week prior to the program. COVID-19 safety precautions will be followed.

This program is for ages 9 and older. Registration is required. To register for the morning session, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/Zvw. To register for the second session, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/Zvi.
