St. LOUIS, Mo.—The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) joins The Open Space Council (OSC) and its partners to invite the public to be part of the 2022 Confluence Trash Bash, April 4-9 in the St. Louis area.  Confluence Trash Bash partners for 2022 also include Missouri Stream Teams, Great Rivers Greenway, MSD Project Clear, and Earthways Center.  The event is sponsored by Missouri American Water.

One of the largest annual cleanup efforts in the area, the Confluence Trash Bash is a chance to help clean up the rivers and creeks within the Lower Missouri River watershed. Volunteers can choose from multiple cleanup locations or storm drain marking sites within the watershed between April 4-9. Storm drain marking kits will be provided on Saturday, April 9.

This year there will be guided and self-guided clean-up options for volunteers and inlet marking opportunities. For guided clean-ups, site leaders will be available to provide instructions and supplies.  All guided cleanup opportunities will also have a site supervisor present to provide volunteers with supplies, sign-in participants, and lead them through the cleanup of the chosen site.

The event is free, and all volunteers will be provided with work gloves and trash bags to use for the cleanups.  Participants will also receive a free t-shirt while supplies last.  Volunteers must pre-register and complete a liability waiver to receive their free t-shirt, select a cleanup site, and help event organizers coordinate supplies. Upon registering, volunteers will receive confirmation emails regarding collecting trash and where to place garbage once it is collected.

Available clean-up sites include:

  • Schaefer Bend County Park Tuesday, April 5 at 10 a.m.
  • Bellefontaine Conservation Area Friday, April 8 at 10 a.m.
  • UMSL Campus Cleanup Friday, April 8 at 9 a.m.
  • Bridgeton Community Cleanup Saturday, April 9 at 9 a.m.
  • Guided Water-Based Cleanup Site at Mallard Lake at Creve Coeur Park on Saturday, April 9 at 9 a.m. OSC will provide canoes on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants may also bring their kayaks or canoes.

Self-guided sites are also available. Volunteers can participate at their convenience at these cleanups anytime between April 4-9. Upon registering, participants will receive an email with supply pickup locations, dates, and times.
