HIGH RIDGE, Mo.—National Hunting and Fishing Day is Saturday, Sept. 23. To celebrate, the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Jay Henges Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center in High Ridge is offering free shooting Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Attendees will have free access to one hour of rifle, pistol or archery shooting, shotgun patterning, or one free round of clays for trap shooting at the range. The event is open to families and individuals of all experience levels, from veteran marksman to first-time shooters. It offers the opportunity to practice for upcoming hunting seasons, sight in rifles, and sharpen general marksmanship skills.
Jay Henges Shooting Range features a 100-yard, baffled, rifle/pistol range with 20 covered booths with target placements at 7, 15, 25, 50, 75 or 100 yards. Additional facilities include three trap fields, a shotgun patterning range, and a four-target static archery range.
Participants must bring their own firearms and ammunition. No reservations are required and availability will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
National Hunting and Fishing Day was established by Congress in 1972 to recognize outdoor sports enthusiasts and their contributions to wildlife conservation and habitat improvement. It is commemorated annually through community outreach events such as the free shooting at MDC ranges.
