JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Discover nature in a different light by participating in a free guided, moonlit hike at Runge Conservation Nature Center Aug. 11. Runge volunteers will lead an interpretive evening hike starting at 8 p.m. on a nature center trail.
A number of animals and insects found around Runge are more vocal at night than in the day. Becky Matney, assistant manager of the nature center, said visitors will be able to hear the songs of nocturnal green frogs, bullfrogs, and katydids.
“It’s a totally different sensory experience than it would be walking in the daytime,” said Matney.
The hike will take place just days after a full moon. Naturalists hope to have enough moonlight to walk the trail, but they’ll also have flashlights on hand for participants. Be sure to bring a water bottle and wear appropriate shoes for walking.
Registration is required and can be made by calling Runge at 573-526-5544. This event is FREE and open to anyone ages 7 and older, but all children must be accompanied by an adult.
Runge Conservation Nature Center is located at 330 Commerce Drive in Jefferson City. The nature center is open daily and has exhibits, trails, and interpretive programs for all ages.
