JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Celebrate the Show-Me-State’s great outdoor offerings on Saturday with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and conservation partners at various National Hunting and Fishing Day events around the state. National Hunting and Fishing Day was created and designated by Congress in 1972 as the fourth Saturday of every September. The day commemorates conservation successes past and future, and honors those sportsmen and sportswomen who began the modern conservation movement. MDC encourages Missourians to discover nature through various National Hunting and Fishing Day events around the state this Sept. 28.

In the Moberly and Hannibal areas, join MDC and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for a variety of free, fun, family activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mark Twain Lake. Activities will include an archery tournament, shooting range access, fishing pole casting instruction and practice, a BB-gun range, hands-on exhibits and displays, electrofishing demonstrations, bird dog demonstrations, turkey calling demonstrations, special presentations by conservation groups, and concessions. In the Cape Girardeau area, spend “A Day on the River” hosted by MDC from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Riverfront Park in downtown Cape Girardeau. Activities will include boat rides, live aquatic animal displays, Asian carp filleting demonstrations, kids’ crafts, and informational booths from many supporting agencies. In the Springfield area, get information on a variety of outdoor activities at Great Outdoors Day from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MDC’s Bois D’Arc Conservation Area northwest of Springfield. The event will include shooting and archery demonstrations, free fishing, and info on forestry programs, camping, fly-tying and hiking. Smokey Bear will also meet and greet the public. In the Columbia area, join MDC and the University of Missouri before the MU Tigers take on Arkansas State. The event will take place from 3 to 6:30 p.m. south of Memorial Stadium, across from the Hearnes Center on Mick Deaver Dr. Offerings will include fishing, hunting and outdoors-related information, real animal furs to touch, a large aquarium featuring Missouri fishes, live reptiles, exhibits about Missouri’s wildlife, and photo opportunities with Smokey the Bear. Missourians can also register to win one of three outdoor hunting activities: a guided youth duck hunt, a guided bass fishing trip, and a guided youth and adult spring turkey hunt. In the St. Louis area, join MDC and St. Louis County Parks from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Antire Valley County Park in High Ridge. The free event will feature fishing, hunting and outdoors-related activities, archery and air gun shooting, the MDC mobile Operation Game Thief display, canon netting demonstrations, and displays from more than a dozen conservation and outdoor organizations. In the Kansas City area, join MDC and Ducks Unlimited (DU) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MDC’s James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area in Lee’s Summit for a variety of free outdoor activities. The free family fun will include fishing, wildlife displays, trapshooting, archery and an air-rifle range. DU will offer free Greenwing memberships and a duck wing maze.
