JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Celebrate Henry David Thoreau’s 200th birthday at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Runge Nature Center at 6:30 p.m. July 13 by learning more about the writer and his philosophies about nature.
“I think keeping a journal by sketching and writing about nature is the best way to learn about it,” said Kay Kasiske, the Runge volunteer leading the program. “Henry David Thoreau was excellent at understanding that and learning about nature in that way.”
Visitors will learn how Thoreau observed the world and put some of his methods into practice. They’ll learn about journaling and listening in nature, and then practice those skills on the trail at Runge Nature Center. In his journals, Thoreau wrote about climbing mountains to get to better vantage points. Participants will be able to climb the fire tower to observe from there.
“It’s a very unique way to celebrate someone’s birthday,” said Kasiske. “We won’t be giving out cake, but we’ll be giving out some really sweet ideas.”
This event is open to anyone over age 10. Registration is required and can be made by calling Runge at (573) 526-5544.
Runge Conservation Nature Center is located at 330 Commerce Drive in Jefferson City. The nature center is open Tuesday through Saturday and has exhibits, trails, and interpretive programs for all ages.
