St. Charles — There’s no doubt that good marksmanship skills play a key role in hunting success. But it takes more than a sharp eye to be effective at hunting migratory and upland birds. Proper shooting technique and understanding ammunition characteristics are both just as crucial. They’re also critical to reduce the unwanted wounding of birds.

“Effective Wing Shooting for the Hunter” is a workshop that sets its sights on giving hunters the knowledge they need to become better wing shooters.

Kirkwood, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will host a public meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, at its Powder Valley Nature Center in Kirkwood to provide information on Missouri deer and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and to get comments about limiting the spread of CWD among captive and free-ranging deer.

Powder Valley is located at 11715 Cragwold Road in Kirkwood, near the intersection of I-270 and I-44. The nature center’s phone number is 314-301-1500.

WINONA, Mo. –The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will celebrate National Hunting and Fishing day on Saturday, Sept. 21, with special events at the Twin Pines Conservation Education Center. The center’s manager, Melanie Carden-Jessen, said this day provides an opportunity to sharpen outdoor skills that will improve every hunting and fishing experiences.

REGULATIONS

The Commission approved the following 2013-14 waterfowl hunting seasons and limits.

Duck Season:

North Zone: Oct. 26- Dec. 24

Middle Zone: Nov. 2 – Dec. 31

South Zone: Nov. 28 – Jan. 26

Shooting Hours: One-half hour before sunrise to sunset.

KENNETT, MO – Some of the key tasks assigned to employees with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) are to help people discover nature, to ensure Missouri remains a great place to hunt and fish and to demonstrate how conservation enriches Missourian’s quality of life. According to MDC Conservation Agent Eric Heuring, the Combs Lake fishing clinic on Aug. 17 fit right in with those assignments.

Kansas City, Mo. – A rainy and cool spring affected crops in fields managed on public wildlife areas for dove hunting. The doves will be flying as usual when the season opens on Sept. 1. But hunters who scout fields ahead of the season opener will boost their chances for success, biologists say.

HANNIBAL, Mo. — Families and outdoor enthusiasts are invited to celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day on Sept. 28. St. Louis, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will partner with St. Louis Sprout and About on the 2013 Sprout and About Annual Celebration event Saturday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Museum of Transportation.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has named Dustin Lindgren of Patton as Missouri’s Logger of the Year for 2013. Lindgren was first awarded a regional award before he competed with other regional winners from across Missouri to win the state level recognition.

Crader Distributing Company, headquartered in Marble Hill, assisted in recognizing the loggers’ accomplishments and dedication to practicing what MDC has established as forestry Best Management Practices.

Walker, Mo. – A 300 score by a youthful archer is perfect, and now the Northeast Vernon County Elementary School and High School have pushed the Missouri National Archery in Schools Program (MoNASP) past that mark.

The MoNASP target archery program began in Missouri in 2007 with 20 schools. Northeast Vernon County Elementary School recently became the 300th school in the program, and the district’s high school in the rural town of Walker became 301.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – It’s time for ruby-throated hummingbirds to gear up for their annual fall migration to Central America. That also means it’s time for the annual Hummingbird Celebration at the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The free public event will run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will include hummingbird banding, interactive informational displays, presentations, and other activities of interest to young and old alike.
